Conrad Hilton escapes jail term, but undergoes 90-day rehab for substance abuse

Published On: 03-16-2016 in Category: substance abuse, treatment

Teens and youths are vulnerable to substance abuse, and the rich young adults are more prone to the misuse of drug or alcohol as they have more disposable income to spend on things that give them pleasure. No wonder, we come across many instances of celebrities taking to substance abuse.

In February 2016, hotel heir and brother of socialite Paris Hilton – Conrad Hilton – was ordered to undergo a 90-day rehab program for developed substance use disorders, violating his probation and failing drug tests. However, according to reports, the judge rejected a 60-day jail term sought by the authorities. But his probation was extended for another three years.

Suffering from a substance use disorder at a young age can cause life-altering behavioral problems. Hilton, 21, had behaved rudely on a British Airways flight from London to Los Angeles in 2014. He had threatened to kill the crew and called passengers “peasants.”

The charge

According to a report in the City news Service, Conrad’s dependence on drugs made him insane  on the flight where he threatened the flight attendants and disrupted the crew. He smoked marijuana on the flight and refused to switch off his phone.

Now, as per the court order, the great-grandson to hotel magnate Conrad Hilton will undergo outpatient substance abuse treatment in Los Angeles for three months.

Earlier, after the incident in 2014, the court had ordered Hilton to serve 750 hours of community service, and imposed a fine of $5,000. He was also asked to go through three programs of mental and substance abuse treatment. Hilton was also put on a three-year probation after he ignored the instruction to keep away from addictive substances.

Yet another charge against the 21-year-old was that he forcibly entered his ex-girlfriend’s home after she broke up with him.

Awareness among youth

Early intervention is the best way to prevent the youth from taking to substance abuse. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data released in 2013, 35 percent of the high school students in the United States reported being current drinkers, 20 percent as binge drinkers, and 24 percent as the user of marijuana.

As per the 2014 data of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), more than 20 percent of those aged 12 and older have used prescription drugs for a non-medical purpose.

Many young adults consume illicit drugs unknowingly, resulting in uncontrolled behavior and mental illness. So, it is very important to promote awareness about consequences of substance abuse.
