Two-time NBA champion and reality TV star Lamar Odom, who was hospitalized in October 2015 after taking cocaine and a heavy dose of a Viagra-like medication at a Nevada brothel, has been making a miraculous recovery and is gradually treading the path to sobriety.

Odom still has issues with regaining short-term memory and basic motor skills. His estranged wife Khloe Kardashian has been taking care of him. Odom won NBA championships in 2009 and 2010 and was named the NBA Sixth Man of the Year in 2011.

Odom and drugs

According to a report published in the Daily Mail, Odom, who was discharged from the hospital in January 2016, has a history of drug problems. He suffered brain damage and a stroke and was found unconscious at the brothel where he partied all weekend. He was put on life support in the hospital. Investigators claimed that Odom was addicted to cocaine for a long time.

He remained in coma for the next four days and then made a considerable progress. However, there were no illegal drugs found in Odom’s VIP suite. According to a report published in the LA Times in 2015, Odom had taken about 10 1,875-milligram doses of a packaged supplement called Reload 72-Hour Strong Sexual Performance Enhancer for Men over three days. He grew up with an addict father and was suspended from the NBA in 2001 for failed drug tests.

In August 2013, Odom was arrested for driving under the influence. He pleaded no contest to the charge and accepted a sentence of three-year probation and three months of alcohol abuse treatment

Attending rehab

Celebrities may seem to have a larger than life image for their fans, but they are just as vulnerable to life’s tragedies as the rest of us. The problem of celebrities struggling with drug addiction is not uncommon, with some even losing their lives. The case of Odom can be an inspiration for all to say no to drugs.

Attending an effective rehab program for overcoming addiction is a must to regain sobriety, and many celebrities suffering from various addictions have been enrolling into such programs for recovery. However, at times, even they don’t seem to get the right care owing to their negligence and misjudgment. Addiction afflicts the brain in ways which affect the ability to react or understand the right perspective of things.

Los Angeles is witness to innumerable celebrity drug overdose cases, many of which have even grabbed the eyeballs of the global media. Lately, drug overdoses have become the third leading cause of injury and premature death in Los Angeles County.

The Hollywood film industry, which sees celebrities make loads of money, has always been a soft target of drug dealers. So, to ensure complete recovery, the remedial measures should include controlling the environment, addressing their vulnerability to drug traps and other monitoring steps.

There are also celebrity stories that are testament to a successful second chance in life. If you or someone you love is dealing with an addiction, it’s time to seek expert guidance.
